A flue lining in a masonry chimney is defined as “A clay, ceramic, or metal conduit installed on the inside of a chimney and is intended to direct the combustion products to the outside atmosphere, as well as protecting the chimney walls from heat and corrosion.” Not all building codes require a flue lining but it has been highly recommended since the early part of the century.
Three main functions of Chimney Liners:
1.) Helps protect the house in preventing fires within the chimney. Unlined Chimneys have a much higher risk for fire combustion.
2) Helps protect the life of chimney. Research has shown that if the flue gases begin to penetrate the bricks and mortar of the chimney, it tends to cause more wear and tear.
3) Incorrect installation and sizing can lead to excessive creosote build-up.
